Illuminating What Matters: Celebrating Lights On Afterschool 2025

Every October, across America, afterschool programs open their doors, turn on their lights, and proudly showcase the incredible work happening every day for millions of children and families. October 23, 2025, marks the 26th annual Lights On Afterschool—and WINGS is joining the celebration!

Organized by the Afterschool Alliance, Lights On Afterschool has become the only nationwide event dedicated to celebrating afterschool programs and the vital role they play in our communities.

Shining Bright For Kids and Families

The research is clear, and the results speak for themselves - afterschool programs deliver impact.

Academic Success: Students in afterschool programs consistently outperform their peers by earning higher math, English and science grades with a higher overall GPA, too. They're also less likely to drop out of school and show improved attendance and fewer suspensions.

Foundational Skills for Life: Perhaps most importantly, afterschool programs help youth build the skills they need to succeed beyond the classroom. Students develop leadership abilities, improve conflict resolution, and gain competencies that prepare them for college, careers, and life.

Safety and Peace of Mind: Students in afterschool programs report feeling safe, being treated fairly by staff, and feeling like they belong and matter.

These programs aren't just good for kids—they're essential for families and our economy. Nearly 9 in 10 voters across the nation say that quality, affordable afterschool and summer programs help parents work and strengthen the economy. When parents know their children are in a safe, enriching environment after school, they can focus on their jobs and provide for their families.

The economic impact is real. Research shows that every $1 invested in afterschool programs saves at least $3 by improving kids' performance at school and reducing crime and juvenile delinquency.

The Gap We Need to Close

Despite all this evidence—despite the overwhelming support from parents, educators, and voters across political lines—there's a sobering reality: nearly 25 million children are waiting for an afterschool program. That's 25 million kids who would participate if a program were available to them.

"We see firsthand what happens when children have access to quality afterschool programming," says Julia Rugg, CEO of Wings for Kids. "These aren't just programs—they're lifelines that help kids build the social and emotional skills they need to thrive now and far beyond their time with us. Every child deserves this opportunity."

This is why Lights On Afterschool matters—it's a call to action for everyone to band together and advocate for the kids who desperately need a safe, caring environment when the last school bell rings.

Currently, the 21st Century Community Learning Centers (21st CCLC) initiative is the only federal funding stream dedicated solely to local before-school, afterschool, and summer learning programs. These funds serve 1.4 million youth and 400,000 families across 10,000 communities—but imagine what we could do with more support for the 25 million still waiting.

Join Us in Turning On the Lights

This October 23rd, as we celebrate the 26th annual Lights On Afterschool, we're not just celebrating programs—we're celebrating potential. The potential of every child who walks through our doors. The potential of families to thrive when they have support. The potential of communities that invest in their young people.

The message is clear and powerful: afterschool programs are essential to helping children, families, and communities thrive. Together, we can ensure they get the recognition and support they deserve.

Let's keep the lights on—not just for one day, but for every child who deserves a chance to discover their strengths, build their skills, and reach their full potential.
