Opening The Doors To Experience Lacrosse in the Lowcountry
WINGS Afterschool utilizes experts in our communities to lead Enrichment Time twice a week. For many of our students, we're exposing them to activities they would not otherwise experience. Like lacrosse, a sport historically reserved for upper class, suburban communities. In partnership with Coastal Lacrosse, WINGS kids learn the fundamentals of lacrosse in a fun and engaging way, utilizing lacrosse sticks, soft lacrosse balls, and mini goals to simulate a real game. With the Coastal Lacrosse coaches and our WINGS Leaders, SE skills like teamwork, positive self-talk, and responsible decision making are woven into all moments on the field.
A group of WINGS kids were so taken with the sport, they kept playing outside of the allotted Enrichment Time. With the support, resources, and coaching from Ed and the Coastal Lacrosse team, WINGS boys joined a rec team and even took part in their first-ever lacrosse tournament, almost beating the top-ranked team.
Through partnership and collaboration, WINGS kids now have their sights set on a whole new horizon.
Coastal Lacrosse is the recipient of a National Diversity Grant from the US Lacrosse Urban Lacrosse Alliance to fund new equipment and program expansion. Coastal Lacrosse works with WINGS Afterschool at three direct service sites in Charleston, SC.
