Wings for Kids Receives Cigna Group Foundation Grant to Support Youth Mental Health and Social Emotional Learning
Wings for Kids is thrilled to announce our organization has been selected as a recipient of the Cigna Group Foundation’s new initiative to support youth mental health. This generous grant program, allocating $9 million to 22 youth mental health grantees over the next three years, is set to make a profound impact on the lives of young people in under-resourced communities.
Addressing the Youth Mental Health Crisis
According to a recent analysis by the Evernorth Research Institute, the number of young people with mental health conditions has increased by 28% since 2018, and the number of youth with at least two mental health diagnoses has risen by 48% over the same period. These statistics highlight the urgent need for proactive skillbuilding and effective mental health support and interventions for children and teens.
Mental health is a critical component of overall well-being, and it’s an area that requires immediate attention, especially among children in marginalized communities. Children often face a myriad of challenges—including stress, trauma, or anxiety—but have limited access to mental health resources.
How SEL Addresses Mental Health Challenges
Research shows that instruction in social emotional learning (SEL) and character development with a focus on essential skills such as self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship skills, and responsible decision-making, has a positive impact on students’ academic performance, emotional regulation, and critical thinking abilities. These skills develop the protective factors children need to navigate stress, manage their emotions, and develop healthy relationships. As a result, SEL not only supports academic success but also promotes overall mental well-being. Through our expanded programs, we aim to provide students with the tools they need to thrive both in and out of the classroom.
"Right now, improving the mental well-being of our kids and teens is a clear priority for us, and we are grateful for the opportunity to collaborate with so many organizations making a difference in their communities." - Melissa Skottegaard, board chair of The Cigna Group Foundation
The Impact of the Cigna Group Foundation Grant
With the support of the Cigna Group Foundation, WINGS will expand our reach and enhance programs focused on positive youth development and mental wellness for children in vulnerable communities. This grant will enable WINGS to address post-pandemic stress and distress among youth, with a particular emphasis on programs delivered in schools, out-of-school programs, and related settings.
Key Goals and Benefits
The grant program aims to achieve several key goals in its first year:
WINGS will empower more parents, caregivers, and youth-serving professionals to support children’s positive mental health and behavior development through its partnership with the Cigna Foundation.
The social emotional skills training for educators and community leaders will be evidenced-based, accessible, evaluated and assessed, significantly enhancing the social, emotional, and mental health development of thousands of children across Georgia.
WINGS’ innovative and interactive training platform provides a scaled approach to learning and addresses the critical need for social emotional development for children and families from historically underserved backgrounds.
By combining SEL with mental health resources, we can create a holistic approach to education that addresses both the emotional and psychological needs of children. This integrated model ensures that children not only learn essential life skills but also receive the mental health support they need to overcome challenges and succeed in life.
Looking Forward
Our mission has always been to equip kids with the necessary life skills to thrive—in and outside of school. Our programs focus on teaching self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship skills, and responsible decision-making. These core competencies are vital for the personal development and overall well-being of children.
We are incredibly grateful to The Cigna Group Foundation for their commitment to enhancing the lives of children in under-resourced communities. Together, WINGS and The Cigna Group Foundation will make a lasting impact on the lives of children.
